Starting salary: $115,000/year
Location: Austin, Texas

The 19th’s Chief People Officer will help make us the model news organization we strive to be, overseeing day-to-day human resources in a fast-growth start-up environment, as well as directing our recruiting, training and development, and diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and best practices. The CPO will serve as counsel to an extraordinary staff, and as thought partner to the CEO, publisher and editor-in-chief, providing strategic guidance on culture, employee relations, compensation and performance management.

Responsibilities include:

  • Oversight of the full suite of 19th HR needs, from providing advice and counsel on cultural, performance, interpersonal and organizational issues to administering employee compensation and benefits systems 
  • Instituting best practices around diversity, equity and inclusion, including developing and implementing effective and consistent training and mentorship programs
  • Managing talent initiatives, from recruiting and onboarding to employee retention and offboarding 
  • Developing relationships across staff and becoming someone who is sought for advice and counsel 
  • Advising senior leadership and managers on HR best practices, employment law and labor regulations, and diversity and equity in fundraising
  • Helping to maintain a strong and connected staff culture in a remote work environment

Relevant skills include:

  • 5+ years of leadership experience in human resources 
  • Comprehensive knowledge of all facets of staff-facing HR
  • Personal integrity, fairness and the credibility needed to gain trust across all levels of an organization 
  • Experience supporting senior leadership teams 
  • General business and financial acumen
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills
  • The ability to adapt HR solutions to a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, start-up environment that spans a dozen states
  • Demonstrated success at cultivating strong relationships and creating partnerships across organizations. 
  • Experience in recruiting and developing candidates who bring greater diversity to an organization. 
  • Experience providing training in diversity, equity and inclusion
  • News media or not-for-profit human resources experience a plus
