The 19th is an independent, nonprofit newsroom covering the intersection of gender, politics, policy and power. Our mission is to give women and LGBTQ+ people — especially those excluded from the promise of the 19th Amendment by their gender, race, ethnicity, class or disability — the information they need to fully participate in our democracy. Our aim is to help them play a more equal and active role in shaping the future of American politics, policymaking and power structures.
Our Journalism
At The 19th, we believe you can’t fully understand politics, policy or power without looking through the lens of gender and race. Our journalism holds leaders accountable when rights are threatened, shines a light on inequities and tells the human stories behind the headlines.
Our reporting centers voices that have long been missing from mainstream news. The asterisk in our logo is for the women and LGBTQ+ people whose experiences complete the American story.
Our People

The 19th was founded in 2020 by five women who believed the future of journalism should be more inclusive. Behind every 19th story is a team of journalists, designers, engineers and operations and business leaders driven by the same belief: that rigorous, representative and accurate journalism can help build a more just and equitable world.
