We’re hiring a Climate & Sustainability Reporter

Applications for this role have now closed. Please see our jobs page for our open positions.

Starting salary: $75,000
Location: Anywhere

Climate change is a leading global issue and one that disproportionately impacts women in the U.S. The 19th’s climate and sustainability reporter will cover issues ranging from increased global migration by women to America to the propensity of low-income women and LGBTQ+ people to live closer to areas impacted by fires, floods and industrial pollution.

Through persistent reporting, break-out enterprise and occasional contributions to our daily newsletter, The 19th’s climate and sustainability reporter will hold political and business leaders to account as they attempt to address gender inequities exacerbated by climate change. Other areas of coverage could include food insecurity, the intersection of climate and health, and the women and LGBTQ+ people leading the charge to improve the sustainability of their communities.

The ideal candidate is intellectually curious, a great writer, loves breaking news scoops as much as conceptual scoops, and is comfortable on TV, the radio and the event stage.

Responsibilities include:

  • Writing two to three stories per week on your beat.
  • Pitching, reporting and executing three to four longer projects per year.
  • Collaborating with other reporters across the newsroom on various stories or projects.
  • Occasionally representing The 19th across on TV, the radio or the event stage.

Relevant skills include:

  • 3+ years reporting experience, preferably on this beat or an adjacent one.
  • Filing clean, accurate copy on a tight deadline.
  • Ability to write pithy, clear headlines to accompany a story.
  • Collaborations with other reporters on stories that cross multiple beats.
  • Familiarity with GSuite, WordPress, all social media platforms, and reporting tools like public databases.

We know there are great candidates who might not check all these boxes or who possess important skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself. We also encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities.

Benefits

  • 20 days paid time off, plus major holidays (13 per year)
  • Health, dental and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with matching
  • Flexible work hours
  • Professional development/conference stipend
  • Up to 6 months paid family leave
