We’re hiring a Political Reporter

Applications for this role have now closed. Please see our jobs page for our open positions.

Minimum salary: $75,000/year

Location: Remote – Anywhere (U.S.)

Reports to: Politics editor

We are looking to expand our coverage of politics, reflecting the voices of voters around the country as well as what is happening at the White House and in the rest of Washington. The 19th’s new political reporter will cover the issues and people shaping our politics, reporting on the concerns of women and LGBTQ+ people, the activists pushing for changes, and the politicians hoping to appeal to all of them.

We are looking for a reporter who wants to dive into what’s driving U.S. politics and policy, from the midterms to the next presidential election and beyond. You should be excited about the potential to report from around the country, writing news stories as well as deep dives. You will bring us the stories of people from key places, shedding light on where politics, people and policy come together. You understand that political journalism is at its best when it helps people understand the country they live in, from cities to suburbs to rural areas.

The ideal candidate is intellectually curious, a great writer, loves breaking news scoops as much as conceptual scoops, and is comfortable on TV, the radio and the event stage.

Responsibilities include:

  • Reporting and writing two to three stories a week on your beat on deadline
  • Staying up-to-date on the latest political news from around the country, including breaking news, candidates and elections, and other people driving U.S. politics
  • Travel about once a month to report from around the United States
  • Pitching, reporting and executing three to four longer projects per year
  • Collaborating with other reporters and staff across the newsroom on various stories or projects

Non-essential duties (as capacity permits):

  • On occasion, filling in for other reporters or producers
  • Representing The 19th in the media or at our events — virtually or in person
  • Participating in culture building, inclusive decision making and bringing ideas to different parts of our work to help us improve as an organization, such as by helping onboard new team members or participating in our hiring process
  • Participating in team, organizational and individual relationship building, and professional development throughout the year
  • Other duties as assigned

Relevant skills include:

  • 3+ years newsroom experience
  • 2+ years of full-time reporting experience
  • Experience covering politics and political candidates
  • Filing clean, accurate copy on a tight deadline
  • Ability to write concise, clear headlines to accompany a story
  • Collaborations with other reporters on stories that cross multiple beats
  • Familiarity with Google Workspace, WordPress, all social media platforms, and reporting tools like public databases
  • Airtable experience a plus

We know there are great candidates who might not check all these boxes or who possess important skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself. We also encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities.

  • 401(k) Plan (up to 3.5% matching on 6% contribution)
