Inside The 19th

We’re reimagining how our newsroom works together

Our goal is to help readers and viewers make sense of the country and equip them with the context they need to understand politics, policy, power — and possibility.

We can’t do this work without you. Support representative journalism today.

The best journalism doesn’t just point to individual events — it sheds light on the systems and power structures that quietly (or not so quietly) shape daily life. At The 19th, we want our coverage to do just that, to illuminate the forces at work and their effect on the realities our audiences are living through.

As a part of our three-year strategic plan, we spent last year reimagining how we work together — how our teams are set up, what topics we cover, what platforms we publish on and what work we prioritize. To best serve our audiences, we reorganized our newsroom to bring more focus and cohesion to how we report on the forces that affect people’s lives — from democracy and rights to public systems; how people live, work, care for one another; and how they participate in society. And we will hire for new roles to help support this work.

The 19th thanks our sponsors. Become one.

For you, our audiences, it means:

  • Deeper and more sustained reporting on the systems behind the headlines
  • Clearer context to help readers understand not just what is happening, but why it matters
  • More mobilization and collaboration to cover topics like immigration, health and sports.

Our goal is to help readers and viewers make sense of the country through the lens of gender and race as news events unfold, and equip them with the context they need to understand politics, policy, power — and possibility.

You’ll continue to see this reflected in how stories are framed, how topics intersect and how we break down complex issues over time.

Our staff page is updated to reflect the changes to our editorial team, and you may also be hearing from our staff as they share more with their networks.

We kicked off the new year with our new teams and a new energy — and we’re already putting all of it to work.
