Meet the 19th

Our newsroom exists to address the unfinished business of the 19th Amendment.

The 19th is an independent, nonprofit newsroom reporting on gender, politics, policy and power. We’re named for The 19th Amendment – a watershed moment in our democracy that was meant to make voting a right regardless of sex. In reality, it gave White women the right to vote, while women of color remained disenfranchised for another four decades. We acknowledge that fact in our logo with an asterisk, and dedicate our reporting to the women and LGBTQ+ people still fighting to be seen and heard in our democracy.

Our Journalism

At The 19th, we believe you can’t fully understand politics, policy or power without looking through the lens of gender and race. Our journalism holds leaders accountable when rights are threatened, shines a light on inequities and tells the human stories behind the headlines.

If you’re new to our reporting, explore it in practice below or read the latest.

Our People

The 19th was founded in 2020 by five women — Emily Ramshaw, Amanda Zamora, Errin Haines, Johanna Derlega and Andrea Valdez — who felt the people most affected by politics and policy decisions were the ones least represented in the media. We launched our newsroom amid a global pandemic, a national reckoning on race, economic uncertainty and a high-stakes presidential election — conditions that shaped what we cover and who we serve.

Six years in, we’re a team of nearly 60 journalists, designers, engineers and business leaders committed to giving women and LGBTQ+ people – especially those excluded from the promise of the 19th Amendment by their gender, race, ethnicity, class or disability – the information they need to fully participate in our democracy.
