Chief Strategy Officer (She/Her)

I’m Alexandra Smith, chief strategy officer at The 19th. It’s my job to bring together our brilliant staff from across teams to ensure we’re working toward our ambitious mission in ways that center you, our dear readers, and are sustainable for our nonprofit business.

I’ve paired human-centered design thinking principles with news organization strategy in various roles for nearly 15 years, across startup and legacy newsrooms, in local and national media, in an effort to prioritize our readers’ needs and experiences to create trustworthy, inclusive journalism. I love to learn about effective journalism business models and leadership strategies, and have completed several continuing education programs and fellowships at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, Columbia University and Harvard University.

I’m a Jersey girl at heart, a proud Rutgers grad and now live in colorful Colorado.

My work is free to consume and free to republish because of contributions from readers like you. A donation of $19 goes a long way toward sustaining our nonprofit newsroom.
