Zurii Conroy

People Operations Manager (She/Her)

I’m Zurii Conroy, the people operations manager at The 19th. Since joining the organization in 2022, I’ve been proud to support key human resources processes, elevate our employment experience and help our fellowships team  create meaningful pathways for the next generation of HBCU-trained journalists. As an HBCU alum of Howard University (HU, you know!), helping to shape and champion our fellowship program is one of my greatest joys.

With nearly two decades of experience, my career has centered on improving quality of life for individuals, teams and communities. Before becoming a Senior Certified HR professional, I worked in community-based recreation, community engagement and development, and operations management. My journey has included everything from youth development and senior services to convening community advisory councils — and even partnering with the White House.

Whether I’m onboarding new hires, navigating conflict through a restorative justice lens or demystifying insurance coverage, I bring an equity-driven, people-first approach to everything I do, holding space for honest dialogue, mutual respect, growth, and lasting connection.

And while I’m not a journalist, I am a griot of African American folktales. I also model, crochet and knit, love to jump rope, geek out over nail art and can find the perfect song lyric or movie quote for just about any situation.

My work is free to consume and free to republish because of contributions from readers like you. A donation of $19 goes a long way toward sustaining our nonprofit newsroom.
