She's no stranger to firsts as the first Black woman in Lexington to be district judge and, later, the first to be circuit judge. Now, she's made history again.

Angela Alsobrooks of Maryland and Lisa Blunt Rochester of Delaware will join the small but growing sisterhood of Black women who have served in the upper chamber of Congress.

She won Delaware's at-large House seat on Tuesday, beating her Republican opponent John Whalen. 

As results came in, the mood at Howard University changed. 

The state attorney general beat Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, who had staked his campaign on promises to ban abortion in the state and anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric, Decision Desk HQ projects.

Parents brought their kids to vote with them in the first election where candidates have started taking the needs of families more seriously. For many, their vote was a vote for their children.

A few candidates also have a chance to make history this year.

Michele Morrow’s Democratic opponent, Mo Green, and his supporters say the Republican’s “extremism” threatens the future of public education in the state.

Democrats will be sending a history-making two Black women to the upper chamber but their party will be in the minority.

Election officials have been preparing for the 2024 election by updating protocols, offering more public outreach on how elections are administered and adding safety measures.
