Isabela Espadas Barros Leal

I’m Isabela Espadas Barros Leal, an editor at The 19th. I help assign, edit and shape coverage with a group of reporters focused on child care, the economy, health and more. I joined The 19th from The New York Times, where I was part of the newsroom’s competitive Editing Residency. My rotations on the flexible editing, live news and business desks allowed me to work on the biggest stories in the world: President Donald Trump’s first 100 days back in office, the papal conclave, the outbreak of the war in Iran and much more.

Before The Times, I spent five years at NBC News, where I held various editing roles on the platforms, social and diversity teams.

I live in New York City with my partner and our rotating cast of foster dogs.

My work is free to consume and free to republish because of contributions from readers like you. A donation of $19 goes a long way toward sustaining our nonprofit newsroom.
