I’m Jasmine Mithani, the data visuals reporter at The 19th. I write stories, make charts and check our math. I collaborate on data-driven projects like our polling partnership with SurveyMonkey and our abortion rights dashboard. Lately I’ve been writing about the intersection of technology, gender and politics, drawing from my past lives as a software developer and designer.

Much of my work revolves around core themes of information access, tech-facilitated harms and privacy. My reporting frequently centers LGBTQ+ perspectives and intersects with reproductive rights. I have a soft spot for stories about the South Asian diaspora and good books and try to report on solutions, not just problems.

I contributed to our 2023 Online Journalism Award-winning coverage of the Dobbs decision. My data visualizations have been short- and long-listed for Information is Beautiful Awards. I routinely speak about best practices in journalism around reporting on mixed-race people and working with data about LGTBQ+ people. 

Never formally trained as a journalist, I was instead nurtured by Chicago’s civic media ecosystem. I’ve previously worked at FiveThirtyEight, NPR and South Side Weekly. I now live in Los Angeles after a decade of Midwestern winters.
