I’m Julia B. Chan, The 19th’s editor in chief. I lead our editorial department in producing journalism that aims to center, serve and inform our audiences. I enjoy every aspect of this work, from story conception to content and engagement strategy; to partnering, publishing and distribution planning.
I’ve always been curious (read: nosy) with meticulous research skills, and I’ve dedicated my career to uncovering the truth, context and history behind complex issues while amplifying underrepresented voices.
My work spans various newsrooms and platforms, including print, digital and broadcast media, and has focused on a variety of topics and formats, from breaking news to large-scale investigations.
I held prominent newsroom leadership roles at KQED in the San Francisco Bay Area and Mother Jones. And before that, I led significant cross-platform editorial and strategy contributions at Reveal for The Center for Investigative Reporting and the San Francisco Examiner.
My interest in storytelling is only matched by my commitment to journalistic integrity and accuracy. My dedication to the craft, and fostering communities around this work, has earned me recognition from peers and industry organizations like the Online News Association (ONA) and the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA). Outside of the newsroom, I’ve gained invaluable experience and support as an AAJA board member and founder of the Journalists of Color Slack.
I’m a proud graduate of California’s public higher education system as an alum of San Francisco State University and Foothill College. Growing up as a wild child in the Bay Area, life is a bit more chill these days. I enjoy quiet moments at the beach, loud ones with my family, good music on a decent sound system and all the noodles I can eat.
